My Devotions

Have you ever been reading along in the Bible; following some narrative of Jesus’ ministry and wanted to raise your hand and ask God a question? I do this all the time. In fact this is a major part of my personal devotional time. As a math teacher I have noticed that the students who question me for the purpose of understanding are generally the best students. They even seem to enjoy math. (…believe it or not all you math haters.)

I believe God is the ultimate teacher. He is the great instructor Who teaches us the way life should be lived. I in turn want to be a good disciple (or student…same difference) worthy of the teacher at whose feet I sit. So, I ask a lot of questions.

Proverbs urges us to seek wisdom as if it were a valuable commodity (gold or pearls). Since I recognized that wisdom is not simply cleaver, accurate information but is the person of Jesus, I know that I am seeking a relationship with my Creator not a set of notes so I can pass some cosmic test.

Teachers, in order to encourage efficiency of the teaching-learning process, often say, “There is no such thing as a dumb question.”  That sounds noble but I know I have been asked some questions that were better than others. Part of becoming a good student is to learn to ask good questions.

Today I’m inviting you to join me on a journey…a quest…a pilgrimage.  This is a journey I have been on since my childhood and I plan to remain on it for all eternity… the quest is to know God.

The power of the ancient pilgrimage was not so much found at the destination but in the discussion along the way as well as the safety found in numbers. So this is the spirit in which I offer these musings. I don’t expect to arrive in the time allotted here on earth but let us draw near (Hebrews 10:22)…nearer than we were yesterday.

Since it is impractical to give everyone access to the church website simply request to be friends on Facebook (Darrell Chatraw) and post questions privately or on my wall. Are you ready? Then, let’s get going.
